Daddies, mummies, boys and girls, it is time to turn off the stereo, get off the sofa and make some music!
Music has the ability to develop physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills in a person; and is especially effective in children under the age of 6. However, studies have shown that listening passively to music alone will not yield these results.
A recent study from Northwestern University shows that “it is only through the active generation and manipulation of sound that music can rewire the brain”. The research shows that after two years, students who regularly and actively participated in music classes, showed greater improvements in the way their brains processed speech, compared to classmates who were less involved.
At OMS, we engage the children in this process through the weekly exposure to music-making props and instruments, songs and rhymes, amongst other great activities such as music and movement. Even the youngest babies in our classes get to play with shakers and drums! This gives them a lot of opportunity to make music and experiment with sounds, developing their young minds and skills even further.
So let’s go beyond silent passive listening and make some music!
